Disability Affirming Care

  •  You are not a personal tragedy.

  • You are not always “sick.”

  • You are not brave simply for living with a disability, aka (the super-human and courageous stereotype).

  • You are not helpless and dependent.

Living with a disability can be more obvious, such as a wheelchair to help you get around or crutches to assist in walking. We live in a society that judges “difference” instead of embracing all forms of individuals. Maybe you encountered people staring at you, bullying, or overly “niceness” that may be condescending. When you feel that your family and friends do not fully understand your wishes and desires or, on the other hand, maybe you experience holding you back due to their fears.

Invisible disabilities are not always obvious, as the person may appear “normal” abled body. People living with hidden disabilities may feel invalidated misunderstood. You may hear, “You don’t like too sick” or “They don’t look they should park in a handicap space.” You even experience Imposter syndrome, downplaying your feelings and second-guessing your thoughts. Maybe you push yourself too hard instead of listening to your body. While the outside world may not see your mental and psychical pain- you can feel it every day.

It is not uncommon for some individuals living with disabilities to find it easy to cope than others. It is also equally normal for individuals living with disabilities to struggle with self-esteem, confidence, worry, guilt, embarrassment, negative thoughts, and other concerns.

Counseling disabled individuals may involve:

  • Creating a safe, non-judgemental space, so you can say and be whomever you want!

  • Developing coping skills to feel more relax and less stress

  • Explore and challenge ableism

  • Supporting and helping you navigate medical care

  • Provide support and advocate for your needs

  • Create a better sense of self

Let’s challenge societal expectations!
